Tibor Fonay is an acclaimed Hungarian double bassist and electric bassist, widely regarded as one of the most in-demand musicians in Hungary’s jazz and contemporary music scene. Known for his musical sensitivity, stylistic versatility, and extensive experience both on stage and in the studio, he was born on 27 September 1987 in Hódmezővásárhely, Hungary, into a family of musicians.

 

He began his musical studies at the Péczely Attila Music School in his hometown, studying electric bass with György Vincze. He later continued at the Mindszent music school, studying bass with László Kaszás and piano with Attila Bencsik, developing a strong foundation in groove, harmony, and ensemble playing.
In 2006, he was admitted to the Dr. Lauschmann Gyula Jazz Secondary School in Székesfehérvár, where he studied with Gergő Mits and László Máthé. He later attended the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary’s most prestigious music institution, studying for five years under renowned bassist Béla Lattmann and earning both his bachelor’s degree (2011) and master’s degree in jazz performance (2013).

 

In 2013 he won first prize at the Orszáczky Jackie Bass Competition organized by Hungarian Radio, marking a major turning point in his professional career.
Fonay has received numerous distinctions, including the Junior Prima Award (2014), and two Fonogram Awards:

  • 2020 – with Sárik Péter Trio – X Bartók
  • 2022 – with Subtones – Lángolj

 

He has also been nominated multiple times for Best Hungarian Jazz Album of the Year (2016, 2017, 2018, 2025), and in 2025 received the Vásárhelyi Art Prize, recognizing his cultural impact beyond performance.
As a core figure of Hungary’s jazz scene, he has collaborated with many prominent ensembles and artists, including Sárik Péter Trio, Subtones, Syrius Legacy, Révész Richárd Latin Trio/Quartet, Binder Károly projects, Babos Gyula’s ensembles, and others, covering jazz, fusion, Latin jazz, and contemporary experimental music.
His discography spans both leadership and collaboration roles, including major recordings with Sárik Péter Trio, Subtones, Binder ensembles, and numerous Hungarian jazz and fusion projects.
His playing is characterized by strong musical intuition, deep ensemble awareness, and a highly adaptive style across genres ranging from mainstream jazz to experimental and contemporary music.
