Juan de Dios Mateos was a member of the Opera Studio at the Opéra National de Paris from 2016 to 2018, participating in numerous productions including Les Fêtes d’Hébé, Owen Wingrave, Bastien et Bastienne, Reigen, and The Little Match Girl Passion.
Since then, he has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious opera houses, such as the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opera Australia (both Sydney and Melbourne), Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile, Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, the Oslo Opera, Teatro Verdi in Trieste, and Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo. He has distinguished himself in the bel canto and Mozart repertoire in operas such as The Barber of Seville, L’elisir d’amore, La Cenerentola, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, and Il turco in Italia, as well as in Spanish repertoire including El Caballero de Olmedo, La Dolores, La Araucana, and Luisa Fernanda.
Career highlights include Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville at Deutsche Oper Berlin and Den Norske Opera in Oslo, the Count Belfiore in Il viaggio a Reims at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and in Australia (Sydney Opera House and Melbourne Arts Centre), Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni at the Sydney Opera House and the Ópera de Oviedo, Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola at Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Lindoro in L’italiana in Algeri at the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile, and the Count of Libenskof in Il viaggio a Reims at Deutsche Oper Berlin.
Born in Almería, he began his musical training as a flutist, obtaining a Professional Degree in transverse flute at the conservatory of his hometown. He later began vocal studies privately with Coral Morales and Carlos Aransay, and participated in masterclasses with Raina Kabaivanska, Roberto Scandiuzzi, Hedwig Fassbender, Ildar Abdrazakov, Luciana D’Intino, David Menéndez, Raúl Giménez, and Jaume Aragall, among others.
He has distinguished himself in numerous international vocal competitions: in 2019 he won the “Plácido Domingo” Prize and the “Fundación Ferrer-Salat” Prize at the 56th International Tenor Viñas Competition; in 2017 he won second prize at the “Hariclea Darclée” International Competition in Romania; and in 2023 he received the Audience Prize at the Lousada International Singing Competition.
Recent engagements include The Barber of Seville in Weimar; La traviata (Alfredo) and Handel’s Messiah in Almería; Il califfo di Bagdad by Manuel García (title role) in Seville; Falstaff (Fenton) at the Shanghai Opera; Don Pasquale (Ernesto) at the Hungarian National Opera and in Palma de Mallorca; Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle and Otello (Rodrigo) at the Rossini in Wildbad Belcanto Opera Festival; Don Giovanni at the Shanghai Opera; La Cenerentola at Teatro Verdi in Trieste; L’italiana in Algeri in Salerno; Il viaggio a Reims in Santiago de Chile; and The Barber of Seville at Deutsche Oper Berlin.
Upcoming projects for the 2025/26 season include El gitano por amor in Oviedo and at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid; Mozart’s Requiem and La fille du régiment (Tonio) with the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra; and The Barber of Seville in Weimar.
