Maestro Jin BAEK (DMA, Dr. S. Arts) is the Artistic Director of the Busan Maru International Music Festival and the Busan Festival Orchestra. Since 2004, he has also served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra in China. From 2003, he was Artistic Director of the Masan Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gyeongbuk Philharmonic Orchestra (GPO, 2018–2022).
He has conducted most of Korea’s major orchestras, including the Korean Symphony Orchestra, KBS Symphony Orchestra, Busan Philharmonic Orchestra, Daegu Philharmonic Orchestra, Gwangju Philharmonic Orchestra, Masan Philharmonic Orchestra, Pohang Symphony Orchestra, Gangneung Philharmonic Orchestra, Daegu Opera Orchestra, United Korean Orchestra, KNN Philharmonic Orchestra, Ulsan Sinfonietta, Chungnam Sinfonietta, Changwon Philharmonic Orchestra, Gimhae Philharmonic Orchestra, Eulsukdo Symphony Orchestra, Korea Wind Philharmonic, and many others.
He is in high demand internationally, conducting orchestras across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, including the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra and Extremadura Symphony Orchestra (Spain), Sanremo Symphony Orchestra (Italy), Orchestre Symphonique de Longueuil (Canada), Nordböhmische Philharmonic (Czech Republic), Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Tel Aviv Soloists Ensemble (Israel), SATOBM Orchestra (Mongolia), Slovak Sinfonietta, Symmetry Ensemble (Germany), Moscow Sinfonietta, Far East Symphony Orchestra, and the Union of Concert Orchestras of the Russian Federation.
He has participated in the St. Petersburg International Music Festival “St. Petersburg Palaces” with the Taurida International Symphony Orchestra in Russia, as well as conducted the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra, Reményi Ede Orchestra (Hungary), Academy of Soloists State Orchestra (Kazakhstan), State Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, Tianjin Symphony Orchestra, Harbin Symphony Orchestra, Henan Philharmonic, Xiamen Symphony Orchestra, Hebei Symphony Orchestra, Guiyang Symphony Orchestra, Wuhan Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Beijing Modern Music Festival in China. In Romania, he has conducted the State Symphony Orchestra and the Brașov Philharmonic.
In the United States, he has conducted ensembles such as the Salt Lake Symphony, Garland Symphony, Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Arlington, C.W. Post Orchestra, BYU Wind Symphony, and Hartt Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.
In Japan, he made a major debut in 2011 with the NU Opera Orchestra, conducting The Marriage of Figaro, L’elisir d’amore, Lucia di Lammermoor, The Magic Flute, Turandot, Madama Butterfly, La Cenerentola, Carmen, The Barber of Seville, Rita, and others. He has received excellent reviews for his musicality and conducting skills from many critics.
Under his leadership, both the Masan Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gyeongbuk Philharmonic Orchestra were invited to major international orchestral festivals, enhancing their global reputation in leading concert halls worldwide.
Jin Baek has received numerous awards, including the 27th “Today’s Leading Musician Award” and the “Busan Artist Award” for his contribution to the development of classical music in South Korea. He was also honored with the “2018 Korea Musician’s Honor” by the Music Association of Korea for his dedication to the advancement of music in the country.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Keimyung University in Korea, a Master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, and a Postgraduate Diploma from the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. He was awarded a full scholarship to study advanced conducting at the University of Hartford, where he earned an Artist Diploma under Harold Farberman. He later obtained a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Far Eastern State Academy of Arts in Russia, where he studied opera and symphonic conducting with Sergei Borshev, and a Doctor of Science in Arts from Silla University.
He currently serves as Professor of Conducting at Dongseo University Graduate School.
