Mariam Battistelli
Soprano
Italian soprano born in Ethiopia, Mariam Battistelli graduated with highest honours from the “Lucio Campiani” Conservatory of Music in Mantua and subsequently refined her studies at the Centre de Perfeccionament “Plácido Domingo” of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia.
She appears as Euridice in the film L’Opera! – Arie per un’eclissi, directed by Davide Livermore and also starring Vincent Cassel and Fanny Ardant, presented at the Rome Film Festival in 2024. In the film she performs excerpts from Orfeo ed Euridice, La traviata, Madama Butterfly and other famous arias and duets. For this film she received an award from Filming Italy during the 2025 Venice Film Festival.
Mariam Battistelli won both First Prize and the Audience Prize at the 16th Ottavio Ziino Competition in Rome, and in 2018 she joined the ensemble of the Wiener Staatsoper, where she remained until 2020. There she had the opportunity to debut roles such as Musetta in La bohème, Gretel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, working with conductors such as Christian Thielemann, Adam Fischer, and Speranza Scapucci. Among other Vienna productions, she performed in Cinderella by Alma Deutscher (title role), L’elisir d’amore (Giannetta), and Le nozze di Figaro (Barbarina).
Her role as Musetta in La bohème has led her, in recent years, to debut on many prestigious stages including Teatro alla Scala, Staatsoper Hamburg, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo, and the Royal Opera House Muscat.
Other highlights of her career include Adina in L’elisir d’amore at the Hamburg State Opera and with Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Griselda by Scarlatti and Arianna a Nasso at the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca, Norina in Don Pasquale at Glyndebourne, and Musiques en fête at Chorégies d’Orange in 2023 and 2024.
Her concert repertoire includes Mozart’s Requiem (performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Adam Fischer), Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, and Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater.
Recent seasons’ engagements include Falstaff (Nannetta) at Glyndebourne; Die Fledermaus (Adele) at Teatro Lirico di Cagliari; La bohème at the Grimaldi Forum in Monte Carlo; Mosè in Egitto (Amaltea) in Modena, Piacenza, and Reggio Emilia; L’elisir d’amore at the Hamburg State Opera; L’italiana in Algeri at Teatro Verdi in Salerno; La bohème at Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo and Teatro La Fenice in Venice; and Dido and Aeneas (Belinda) at Teatro Comunale di Bologna.
Highlights of the 2025/26 season include La bohème at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Teatro Comunale di Modena; Rigoletto (Gilda, debut) in Savona; Don Pasquale at Opéra de Nice; and Napoli milionaria at Teatro Comunale di Bologna.
