Universally regarded by orchestras, audiences, and the specialized press as one of the most compelling conductors of his generation, Roberto Beltrán-Zavala has built, over recent years, a strong international reputation as a top-level artist: an exceptional communicator and highly accomplished musician. Beltrán-Zavala establishes solid and intense relationships with the orchestras he collaborates with and is widely praised for his enthusiastic and devoted commitment to the works he conducts.
In recent seasons, Maestro Beltrán-Zavala has made successful debuts with orchestras in the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, France, Romania, Poland, Malta, Argentina, and Mexico, conducting major repertoire works such as the complete symphonic cycles of Dmitri Shostakovich and Gustav Mahler, as well as key 20th-century works by composers including Stravinsky, Varèse, Boulez, Messiaen, Bartók, and Ligeti.
Principal conductor of the emblematic Orchestra Sinfonica dell’Università de Guanajuato (OSUG) since 2015, Beltrán-Zavala is also Artistic Director of the re:orchestra in Rotterdam, considered by the specialized press as one of the finest chamber orchestras in Europe.
He has conducted, among others, the Orchestra of the 18th Century, the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, the Orchestre d’Auvergne, the Silesian Philharmonic, Holland Symphony, the Romanian Radio National Orchestra, the Belgian Chamber Orchestra, the Bremerhaven Opera, the Sinfonica di Sanremo, the Royal Walloon Orchestra, and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.
In autumn 2016, BIS Records released his European debut album as part of a series titled Essential Music. The recording received outstanding critical acclaim (The Strad, Gramophone, Klassik Heute, Amadeus, among others), as well as an excellent public reception. Similarly, in December 2019 OSUG released a live recording of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, and in June 2022 an album featuring Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 for the French label Evidence Classics.
In October 2022, Maestro Beltrán-Zavala received the prestigious “Mahler Prize,” awarded by the Mahler Foundation for his services to the music of Gustav Mahler.
Roberto Beltrán-Zavala holds Mexican and Dutch nationality and is based in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
